Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Acatenango 4x4 tour open again after the 2026 ban?

Yes. Since October 14, 2026, 4x4 tours to Acatenango run again, Monday to Thursday, with local operators authorized by Finca San Sebastián.

  • Why they stopped: CONAP Resolution 01-15-2026 (approved July 7 and published July 14, 2026) bans motorcycles, ATVs and motorized vehicles used for sport or recreation inside the protected zones of Guatemala's volcanoes. After it, Finca San Sebastián, the private farm whose road the 4x4s use, suspended 4x4 access while it worked with CONAP and other authorities on how to comply.
  • Why they're back: on October 14, 2026, the farm reopened access to certain local operators under new conditions aligned with CONAP's requirements.
  • What changed for travelers: tours run Monday to Thursday only, and entry to the farm is earlier, so the overnight and sunset tours now leave Antigua at 8:00 AM (sunrise tour 1:00 AM).
  • Hiking Acatenango on foot is still allowed. Tourist visits to Volcán de Fuego are banned.
  • Tip: book with an operator that can confirm it is authorized by the farm. Our 4x4 tours run with local operators authorized by the farm.

Updated November 5, 2026.

Is the Acatenango 4x4 sunrise tour private?

Yes. This tour is private only: your group travels in a private 4x4 vehicle.

How many people can join?

The price is US$1,200 per group and it's the same whether 1 or 4 people go. A 5th and 6th traveler can join for US$300 each. Because of the farm's restrictions, each vehicle can carry a maximum of 6 passengers, so groups of 7 or 8 need a second vehicle, charged at the full price of US$1,200.

What time does the tour start and end?

Pickup is at 1:00 AM at your hotel in the historic center of Antigua Guatemala, and drop-off is at 9:30 AM the same day.

Which days does the tour run?

Monday to Thursday. Schedules are set by the private farm the route crosses, and tours can't run outside authorized hours.

Is food included?

Yes. Breakfast and hot drinks are included.

Will I see Volcán de Fuego erupting?

Views of Volcán de Fuego eruptions are possible when the volcano is active. Activity can't be guaranteed.

What documents do I need?

Bring a photo of your passport (Guatemalans: DPI). No other documents are accepted. Everyone also signs a liability waiver when entering the private farm.

Can I rent gear or add extra services?

Yes. Backpacks, hiking boots, trekking poles and jackets can be rented (subject to availability), and local guides offer a hike to Volcán de Fuego, a porter or a horse (one way). These are paid in cash on the day at the office before the ascent.

Overall very dissapointing. The information provided both times by the agency was incorrect. Firstly we asked where we could hire jackets, they gave us two places - however failed to mention we could hire jackets from the tour office before leaving - which would have saved us a lot of running around. Secondly, we were told we could not pay the guides in USD for the extra hike, which was also incorrect. The state of the campsite was disgusting. Beds dirty, the toilet was vile - probably had never been cleaned. Completely unsanitary - especially for a women. The food was also terrible - no protein in any of the 3 meals. We paid over $300USD for this experience and felt completely ripped off. The only positive side was the guides/drivers went above and beyond - despite the lack of resources they are given to work with. Would not recommend.

The guides were really nice and helpful. It was a unique experience with a rocky ride up the terrain in the 4x4 and the high altitude trek afterwards. Absolutely worth it for the views of Fuego from Acatenango. A truly unique experience!

It would be preferable for it to be disclosed that booking with this company is actually booking with Mayan. We specifically didn't book with Mayan due to some concerning reviews we saw from other women on their tripadvisor page, so not finding out we were with them until we were already in the 4x4 was pretty disheartening. We had a very bad experience with a Mayan employee at the location where you check in and get your lunch. One of our group members asked an employee a question and was subseqently berated for multiple minutes, despite her asking him numerous times to leave her alone and to please stop talking to her. The tour guides themselves (Walter and his crew) were 10/10, so if this review were only about them it would be 5 stars. They were super friendly and helpful, but at the end of the day we had zero intention of booking with Mayan and weren't pleased with the lack of transparency.
